Newcastle Jets fans have taken to social media to vent their fury after Pukemco Sports Holdings made a “big push” for their team to join the exclusive club of the world’s best sports brands.
Key points:A Newcastle Jets spokesman confirmed the team had received a “good news” email from PumaSports Holdings on TuesdayBut some fans have expressed disappointment over the newsThe club confirmed to The Australian the Newcastle Jets had been contacted by Puma Sports Holdings but the club had not been told it had joined the exclusive group The Jets are one of seven sports teams currently owned by Pukemcos sports conglomerate and Pumasports’ parent company, Puma Group, which owns Premier League football club Manchester City.
“It’s really nice to see Puma, it’s really good to see them, it really does help with the business,” Newcastle Jets football manager Stuart McCallum said.
“I think the whole business aspect of it is a bit confusing to some people.”
We’re not part of it.
We’re not in the club.
“Puma Sports has already joined the club, as part of its deal with Pukemacos to sell a large chunk of its shares to the company’s parent company.”
The Jets are excited to join our long-standing partners and partners at PukeMacos,” Puma chief executive and chief financial officer Peter O’Brien said in a statement.”
Pukemcos sports brands have proven themselves to be highly successful in the sporting world, and we believe this deal will be a key driver in the team’s future success.
“Our teams are proud to have the opportunity to work with the Pukems, who are known for their incredible track record in the sports world, in our shared goal of building a world class sports business.”
But the Jets were disappointed to hear Puma was “brave enough” to make the purchase.
“There’s a little bit of anger from the fans, but that’s not something we’re going to be concerned about,” Jets coach Nathan Buckley said.”
They’ve been fantastic at building up the club and getting the football club up to the level that it’s at now, so we’re just really excited about that.
“In a statement on its website, the Jets said Puma had informed them it was interested in the football team, and it was “expected to complete the transaction with Puma in the next couple of days”.”
PumaSports has been working closely with Newcastle Jets over the last three years to secure the club’s long-term future and we have been very pleased with the progress the club has made since our takeover,” the statement read.”
This transaction is our first step in establishing PukeMos as the exclusive partner in the Newcastle market and it will support our long term growth and success.
“Pukemacs shares have soared by more than 4 per cent in the last 24 hours, rising from $3.65 to $4.55 a share.
While the Jets are yet to confirm a price for the Newcastle deal, it is understood the price will be well above the current market price of $4 a share, and is expected to be more than double the value of Newcastle’s entire football team.
The Jets have previously said they would consider signing a new long-serving sporting director with the new deal in place.”
If Puma are able to get the football squad, it will be the best asset we have,” Buckley said in January.”
But if they’re not able to do that, I’m not sure they’ll be able to buy a new sporting director.
